Birdwatching

Created in 1999, the area of Allpahuayo Mishana, 23 kms north of Iquitos, was created as an officially recognized Reserved Zone. In 2004 it was classified as a National Reserve (RNAM) with an area of 58,069 hectares. This reserve protects for the first time in Peru, an area of the rare white sand forests and black water flooded forests of the River Nanay. The reserve supports one of the highest biodiversities of the entire Amazon basin.

• 21 species of bird in the area are associated with white sand forests and at least 5 new species have been found and described in the last 5 years from the white sand forests of Allpahuayo, Mishana.
• 2 primates, the Lucifer Titi Monkey and the Saki Monkey are officially protected in the reserve.

NANAY WHITE SAND FORESTS

Known as Varillales, the very rare white sand forests consist of sand which is pure quartz. The resulting soil has very few nutrients so the vegetation is highly adapted to the poor soils. This unique habitat has developed dozens of endemic plant species with restricted distribution. New species for science and for Peru are discovered virtually annually.

This reserve, due to its proximity to the city of Iquitos, presents a great opportunity for environmental education and ecotourism.
